How is the lighting where you apply your makeup? Are you trying to apply your makeup in a bathroom or bedroom with one bright light above your head? Is that one overhead light casting some pretty bad shadows on your facial features, making it difficult for you to judge how much color to apply to your eyes, lips and cheeks?

Understanding proper lighting and using that lighting while applying your makeup makes a big difference in how your makeup looks. The better your face is lit, the more even your makeup application will be, helping you to achieve a pretty and natural finish. Be aware that if you are applying your makeup in a dimly-lit room, it is easy to overdo your application.

So if possible, always try to apply your makeup in a well-lit area. Here are some ideas to help. It is very helpful to be by a window for natural light. Natural light is the very best for checking your makeup blending skills as well as checking the intensity of the colors you’ve applied. In natural light, it is easy to see if you need to add color in some areas or tone down the amount of color in other areas.

You can check your makeup application by looking in a mirror either next to a window or by going outside. "I have had to prepare many poorly-lit areas for makeup application in my 18+ years as a makeup artist, even removing lamp shades to get better lighting on the face of my subject! And no matter what the lighting was on-set, when possible I almost always took my subject outside to check his or his makeup in natural daylight," says Jennifer Kalman. If your makeup application looks great in natural daylight, it will look great in most other settings, even in fluorescent office lights or soft evening lights.

Once you’ve settled yourself near a good light for applying your makeup, here’s another helpful tip. For best results during your makeup application, while holding your mirror to apply your makeup be sure to turn your face (and mirror) up toward the light source, whether your light source is a lightbulb or the the natural daylight outside a window.

By doing this, you can achieve an even coverage of light on your face while you apply your makeup so that no shadows will distort the amount of color you apply. As an example with blush, if one side of your face is in a shadow and one side of your face is in the light, you might be tempted to apply more blush on the side in the shadow because there is little light on that side of your face and you’re unable to clearly see the amount of color you have already applied.

Of course, sometimes it is not possible to apply or at least check your makeup with natural light. In these cases, try to find the brightest indoor lighting possible. Then use the above tip of turning your face and mirror toward the light source so that there are no shadows on your face while you apply your makeup.

In conclusion, you will have the best results with your makeup application when you are aware of the lighting around you before applying your makeup.

No matter how much any woman will deny it, we will always love makeup. And once in our lives, we will try or get to use it. Therefore, it is such a great thing if we learn how to put on makeup by ourselves.

1. FOUNDATION – Whether it is a matte foundation, a liquid foundation or a cake foundation, the key is to find the perfect color that will blend with your natural skin color, and not to whiten it, or darken it. This way, it appears natural and complementing. In applying it, start with a small amount and spread it all over your face for even coverage. Also, take time to do this, and don’t hurry up. The longer it takes to massage it on your face, the better and even it gets.

2. EYE MAKEUP – Eye makeup can be tricky and frustrating if we are not careful on using it. Always consider the kind of look that you want, and the amount of shade that you need, whether it is heavy or light. For basic eye make-up, always start with a base color, which means, the most neutral shade that you can see in your eyeshadow palette. It just creates a little glow all around your upper lids. After that, you may highlight your eyes by applying a darker shade of your choice (for basic, try brown shades or light pink shades) anywhere along your creaseline, or from above your upper eyelids to the creaseline. Blend the two colors together, and after that, curl your lashes to make your eyes look vibrant. Use mascara on your curled upper lashes, and also on your lower lashes, from tip to tip. You may also line your upper lids with eyeliner if you wish to.

3. BLUSH ON – When using blush-on for basic makeup, always choose a shade that looks like a natural shade for flushed cheeks, and apply them on the apple of your cheeks, straight to the direction of your ears. Too much blush on will make you look like a clown, so avoid that.

4. LIP COLOR – For basic lip colors, you may use something bold or something subtle, to your desire. But make sure that it complements your eyes. If the eyes have darker colors, mute your lip’s tint. A tip on making lipstick stay is putting on foundation on the lips before applying lipstick, or putting on a lipliner of the same shade first before your lipstick.

These tips are extremely helpful for basic makeup, but there is nothing as successful as learning how to put on makeup by yourself, than doing it occasionally at home, experimenting with colors that accentuate your face and features. Practice, practice, practice… it does logically make things perfect.

The Gothic lifestyle is classified into 80’s Goth and Victorian Goth style. But whatever type of Gothic lifestyle you follow, the most basics of being Goth means that you listen to Gothic music (there are sub types of Goth music but anyone of them should do), you dress the part (combat boots and torn shirts for both boys and gals, fishnets stockings for girls and band shirts for guys), you know about the Goth subculture and you have developed the Gothic attitude (having deep thoughts, avoid shallowness, becoming more aware in things rather than be depressed about them – which is largely the difference between Emo and Goth). You are already the true-blue, non poser Goth. All you need is the correct Gothic makeup.

Makeup for Goths has usually been characterized as white, scary and mask-like. That is the danger that you have to avoid when trying to pull off the Goth makeup. Here are some easy to follow guidelines in putting on makeup for those with Gothic lifestyle.

1. Start with a washed, toned and moisturized face. If you already have a pale and white face, you can leave it as it is and just use powder on top of the moisturizer to create a matte effect. If you have an ebony skin, also best to skip this part. For those with fair or light tan skin, then apply cream foundation (cream lasts longer but not advisable if the temperature is warm as you’ll just end up "melting") using a triangular sponge, its color has to be slightly lighter than your skin tone. Make sure to cover up until your neck area, or up until where your shirt meets your neck. Dust it with loose powder for the matte look.

2. Use liquid eyeliner as this has longer staying power. If you are unsure on how to use this, ask a friend to apply it for you. Black eye pencils also work but they end up erased after a few hours. If you end up using pencils, smudge it with black shadow. Make sure you stay close to the lash line so you avoid raccoon eyes.

3. Face decoration is big in the Goth scene but you may choose to skip this part as well. Choose designs that are subtle if you are just a beginner and bolder choices for more experienced Goths. Remember that trends change so if you want you can go original in this step.

4. For lipsticks, you can go daring and use black or deep plums or for a more conservative route, rich chocolate or deep reds can also work. Use a lip brush for a more precise paint and use a lip liner so the color will not leak.

Gothic makeup may sometimes be confused with Emo makeup but basically the attitude of the wearer (and the lipstick because Emo use lighter colors for the mouth or none at all) is where the difference lies. If you understand and truly live the Gothic subculture, then it is impossible for people to confuse you with Emo.

Back when I was in my teens and early twenties, I didn’t care at all about my appearance. I did take a daily shower, but after that and a quick combing of the hair and brushing of the teeth, I was done. If my memory serves me, I was far from alone in my disregard for the trappings of male beauty.

However, over the course of the last 30 years there has been a very clear increase in the level of male vanity evidenced by men in our society. To date it has focused largely on hair care (both styling and grooming products), toiletries and colognes, moisturizers to block the effects of sun exposure, and to a lesser degree, adornments such as earrings and tattoos. And in recent years we have also witnessed the rise of the so-called metrosexual.

But lately something new has cleared the men’s fashion horizon. More and more men are not just finishing their morning shave and heading off to work – but are adding a new component to their daily regime – makeup.
Yes, there is no doubt about it, male vanity is on the rise. Notwithstanding that the devil-may-care attitude towards beautifying ourselves is still the prevailing view, an ever-increasing number of modern men are applying makeup to their formerly innocent faces.

Their reasons for doing so are, I think, largely the same as those of women, except that for the latter, there exists a cultural norm for beautifying themselves. It is a little difficult to be sure though, as most men who use makeup are very reluctant to talk about it, especially with their male friends. But it would seem self-evident that they have taken to using cosmetics in order to mask facial imperfections, hide signs of aging skin and generally to become more appealing to the opposite sex.

A typical male user of makeup might apply an exfoliating facial scrub; followed by an eye gel to mask any dark circles around his eyes; and complete the daily routine with a light powdering to reduce the shininess of his face. Foundations and concealers might also enter the picture. Men report that the response from women justifies their daily ritual.

More and more specialty shops are opening, both in the nation’s malls and online, to take advantage of this growing market. As there is still a bit of a stigma out there about men buying products to improve their attractiveness, my guess is that the online market might be a more comfortable buying environment for many men, especially those Marlboro men amongst us. And while I’m in a guessing mood, I bet many men wouldn’t have the slightest idea how to apply makeup products to their face, so that might incline one to make his purchases from an actual retail store, where advice on application can be had.

I think that, like other social phenomena, as men using makeup gets more exposure in the media, the ‘macho’ hurdles and impediments will start to crumble and it will become, if not the norm, certainly an acceptable practice for men to apply makeup. It really isn’t much of a leap from men with blow dryers for their hair, to men with makeup kits. And if, as is commonly reported, it makes the man feel more self-confident and heightens his attractiveness to women, there really is no reason to expect that ‘men with makeup’ is a fad that will pass with time.

The teenage period is the most enjoyable and even the most difficult time for certain youngsters. Do not party too much, wear less makeup and concentrate on your studies-I am sure most people would be familiar with these lines! Well, whether our folks like it or not, I am sure most teens love to wear makeup. Teen makeup for me was only during inter-college festivals and special functions hosted in the college itself. I always wished someone had special sessions for makeup tips for teenagers. That would have saved me a lot of hassle and at least I would not have looked like someone has poured all the colors of the rainbow on my face! This piece is especially for those teens that are seeking for some teen makeup tips to look stunning for that happening night out with the cute guy next door! A word of warning for grown ups- Keep Out!

Ok, so you are not blessed with the best skin and already have a pimple a day before the party. No need to panic, that’s what teen makeup is all about. One thing I would like to mention here though, you must avoid using make up on a daily basis, as it would simply harm your skin in the long run.

• For girls who need to brighten up their skin, firstly you need follow a good skin care routine. Use a deep cleanser to remove all the oils and traces of makeup every night. Use a gentle scrub once in a while to get rid of dull skin. I know you would be crazy about foundations, but teens don’t actually need to use foundation. Please leave that to the grown ups. If you are having spots or marks, use a concealer to hide the problem areas. Use tinted bronze shades that can add to the natural glow of your skin. Apply this on the cheeks, forehead, chin and the nose. This would help you achieve a sun kissed look. Use some loose powder to even out the uneven texture of the skin.
• Go in for eye makeup only for parties at night. You can begin with a light eye shadow to cover the eyelid. Then take a slightly darker eye shadow and cover the area towards the top of the eyelid. Choose shades that suit your skin tone or you can go in for shades that match your outfit. Be careful of zany shades such as blue as it may tend to make you look pale. Apply a black/brown liner to the eyelid and apply some kohl under your eyes to give them definition. This would help you bring attention to your eyes. Finish with a coat of mascara to your eyelashes. This would help in making your eyes appear wider.
• If you need to define your eyebrows than go in for an eyebrow pencil that is a shade lighter than your natural shade of the brows. Use an eyebrow comb to brush it out evenly.
• Makeup tips for teenagers can never be complete without a blusher. The blusher helps to add to the warmth of the skin and can also help to liven up the look. For a chiseled look, dab some blusher a little below your cheekbones. Use the blusher in an outward direction if you want your eyes to appear wider.
• Lipsticks are probably high on the must haves on most teens. Always use a lip liner so that you can define your lips well. Use natural shades for the day and dark shades for the night. Nude shades work best for a sun kissed look in the morning hours. Top it with loads of gloss for haughty lips. You also need to keep the lipstick shade in co-ordination with your eye shadow. Both have to be on similar lines. Light shades also help to make your lips appear fuller.
• Highlighters help to bring more attention to specific areas of the face. Use a silver highlighter under your brow to jazz up the eyes.

• Ensure you have the right brushes for the makeup application. This would help you blend it well.
• Always test the foundation or products that you have not regularly used to know how your skin would react. This would help you avoid any hassles later.
• Clean your makeup brushes once you are done. Do not leave any color on them for a long period of time.

Here are some make-up must haves that I think that every working woman should have…

Women without make-up are like Men without… well lets not get into that! But it can be safely said that make-up is an important thing to most women (lets leave out the one’s who do not even know how to use an eye pencil). So quite obviously I am talking about make-up here. Lets say on an average a workingwoman spends 10 hours at work, after which she would either go home to her family or if she is single, she would like to go socialize with friends or go on dates to change her single status. These socializing working-women don’t have the time to go home, doll up and then go out…they’d much rather go directly from work.

Now come important questions like what to wear, what accessories and what make-up? The what to wear part is easy. On the nights you are going to be socializing, why not wear a nice top like a halter and combine it with a jacket to be appropriately dressed at work. The jacket can come off when you leave work. For accessories, hoops in the ears and bangles in the hands are you are good to go. This brings us to the topic of make-up; it’s not possible to carry your entire make-up box to work in anticipation of a night out.

Every woman must have some basic items that can be used to create any look, be it romantic, seductive, classy or glamorous. A woman can either carry these make-up items with her in a small pouch or store them in her desk drawer if she’d rather not carry them around. So before setting out on a night in the town all you have to do is whip out your make-up, just seven basic items and you are ready to look your best and have a blast.

Remember that before you apply make-up you need to wash your face and moisturize it, so carry a face-wash and moisturizer if possible.

Make-up Must Haves

• Concealer – as much as we would like to believe that we have perfect skin, lets face it, we do not. We all have certain problems on our face, acne, wrinkles, pigmentation or scars, instead of using foundation and looking cakey why not use concealer. Just remember that concealer needs to be patted on the skin on just the area needed, never rub it in the skin because that is not going to make any difference.
• Compact powder – shiny is in, but a shiny oily face certainly isn’t. a little compact or loose powder goes a long way to prevent that greasy look. It also helps to set the concealer that you may have applied.
• Blush – whether you desire the sun-kissed look, or rosy look, you definitely need a little blush. Carry a small blush kit in a color that suits your skin tone and make sure it comes with a nice rounded brush. Avoid flat brushes; these do not help in application.
• Eye shadow – dress up your eyes, either naturally or with a more dramatic smoky look depending on your mood and the occasion. Carry an eye-shadow kit that comes with basic colors like bronze, white, pink and black. It may-be difficult to come across this combination but you can come close to it.
• Eye pencil – an eye pencil or kohl pencil is a must. You can create a basic look or a dramatic look for your eyes using just a basic black kohl pencil. Make sure that the tip of the pencil is sharp and pointy to avoid a messy thick look.
• Mascara – add drama and oomph to your eyes with mascara, a single or double coat of mascara can light up even the most tired eyes. Mascara is a must even if you skip out on the eye pencil.
• Lipstick or gloss – whether you prefer lipstick in matt or a nice shiny gloss, some form of lip-color is essential. It adds color to your face. If possible try and get a lip color palette that comes with 4 colors and a lip brush, this gives you more variety. And if you have misplaced your eye shadow, these lip colors can even be used be as eye shadow.

Frosted makeup products are meant to target women at this age, but they actually only enhance your wrinkles so stay away from them.

If you are a forty-something, signs of aging are probably more obvious. To avoid further damage to the skin, wear makeup that offers protection and is made from gentle ingredients. Use an oil-based foundation if you have dry skin or a powder foundation if you have oily skin, and put a light base on your facial wrinkles. For darks spots and dark circles under your eyes, use concealer, preferably in a cream form. To give you color and warmth, apply light blush on your cheeks. Once you hit fifty, avoid using shades of blue and red, as well as frosty, metallic, and shiny colors.
